Norwich youth workers take on football challenge

YMCAFitFootie450A group of youth workers from Norwich churches and Christian charities, organised by YMCA Norfolk, have competed in the recent Fit 4 Work five-a-side football tournament.

Every Wednesday evening YMCA Norfolk staff, along with workers from other Christian charities and churches across Norwich, get together at the YMCA sports centre in Trowse to play football. The sessions are a great way for people to get to know each other, enjoy playing football and keep fit.

On Thursday May 5 the “Fit 4 Work” Norwich district tournament was hosted by Active Norfolk at the Sportspark UEA. It offered a chance for staff football teams based in Norwich to compete against each other in 5-a-side football. The YMCA team was one of seven teams including Swiss Re 1, Swiss Re 2, Norfolk County Council, Yare Valley Oils, The Waffle House and Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health.

The evening started with much anticipation and excitement as the YMCA team sized up the opposition and prepared to put into practice its teamwork and skill. What followed was high energy non-stop football with five back-to-back matches each lasting 15mins! The competition was tough and the team put in their all, right to the final whistle.

Although no matches were won by team YMCA, there was a great sense of team work and some brilliant match play. top goalscorer was Paul Goode (youth worker at Ipswich Road URC) who scored three goals including a blinder against the strongest team.

The tournament was great fun and has given the YMCA team enthusiasm for playing more competitive matches as well as upping the tempo of training!

If you are a YMCA staff member or work for a local youth organisation please feel free to join the football training at the YMCA sports centre, Trowse every Wednesday evening 5 – 6pm. All abilities and levels of fitness are welcome!
