What is Health and Well-being?
Health is described by the World Health Organisation as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. However, in the context of the work of YMCA Norfolk ‘health’ will focus on the physical body and ‘well-being’ on the social, emotional and spiritual aspects.
The successful change4life campaign explains well how the pressures of modern day life can mean that we aren’t active as much and don’t eat as well as we should do. How this affects our physical health and ideas about how to improve health can be found at www.nhs.uk/change4life
Well-being has been described as ‘feeling good and functioning well’. Well-being can be influenced by many factors such as family relationships, financial situation, health, community and friends, work and personal values. Research has shown that there are several tangible actions that can be taken to improve well-being, these include giving time and effort in volunteering, developing good relationships and social networks, being active and developing a greater social/emotional literacy. Work of YMCA Norfolk
YMCA Norfolk has a strong history of positively impacting on the well-being of young people in the community and those resident in hostels across Norfolk by providing a safe housing environment, delivering youth work and supporting pupils and parents in schools. YMCA Norfolk’s “Health and Well-being Development Worker”, Jess Tyson, works to broaden the service and to develop new activities including sport and physical activity. YMCA Norfolk also offers a sports facility in Trowse for use by community groups and sports clubs.
