Choir at Wymondham concert helps build YMCA future

A full Wymondham Abbey, reverberating to the sounds of the Tallis Chamber Choir and the Alexandra Players, helped to raise several thousand pounds for YMCA Norfolk’s Bethel Street building appeal last Saturday (June 4).

Over 200 guests enjoyed the evening concert which was preceded by a garden reception hosted by General Lord Richard Dannatt at nearby Cavick House, a Grade 1 Queen Anne house that has close historic links with Wymondham Abbey.

TallisConcertHelpers420The audience were addressed by Lord Dannatt and YMCA chief executive Tim Sweeting, who both thanked guests and the numerous helpers, including several YMCA residents, for their support.

Richard also talked about the great work of the YMCA and the amazing young people that it helps. He was also able to announce that the fundraising target now stands at less than £500,000.

The internationally-known choir from London performed with their founder and conductor Philip Simms, soprano soloist Lynda Russell, counter tenor Stefan Roberts and the Alexandra Players.

The programme included works by Bach and Handel, including Handel’s recently discovered Gloria and the virtuosic Dixit Dominus.

The concert was hailed by EDP reviewer Christopher Smith with phrases such as: “Exuberant celebration, hustle and bustle of a joyful opening, demanding vocal sections, elegant contrasts, glittering detail and a resonant climax.”

Organiser, and YMCA board member, Chris Lawrence, said: “The concert aimed to both raise funds for and awareness of this vital development in the provision of support and care for disadvantaged young people in our county.”

The event was supported by major sponsors: Ward Gethin, Lovewell Blake, Jarrolds, the Lovell Partnership and Archant.
