OUR PEOPLE: Jasmine fired up about life

JasmineKerrisonNorwich Central YMCA kitchen assistant, Jasmine Kerrison, is a keen photographer, spins fire and is studying for a degree.

Q What does your job entail?

A Preparing and serving food to residents and staff at Norwich Central YMCA, which I have been doing for seven months.

Q Tell us about your photography project?

A I am liaison officer for a photography project called Life Through a Fresh Lens. My role includes: organizing trips and workshops, liaising with hostels and other groups to send their clients to us and seeking new funding to follow the Norfolk Learning Partnership.

Life Through a Fresh Lens was set up three years ago by friends Kev and Keith, and I have worked with them for about a year. It was started to make life skills available in an accessible way to vulnerable adults. Both Kev and Keith have been service users in the past and have seen gaps in support of vulnerable young people.

I got involved because the project interested me from the start. I was able to join them when I moved to Norwich from Manchester. I believe in what they are doing.

FireSpinningWe also run a six-week photography course at Norwich Central. We take clients out to various locations for five weeks and provide a camera. The last day is spent at Castle Museum to look at art and exhibitions, plus a photography exhibition at Norwich Arts Centre.

Each person attending chooses the favourite photo that they have taken, which is displayed at the Art of Norwich Exhibition at St Margaret's Church in St Benedict's St, Norwich. Art of Norwich is run by Russell Keene (Ruski) who lived at St Giles YMCA and is still in contact with staff there.

One of the girls wrote a poem about her favourite photo - one of the most beautiful pieces of poetry I have ever read.

Q What else do you do?

A I spin fire (or fire spinning) - it's called 'Poi' and I am doing a Social Science degree with the Open University. I like football, especially the Canaries, plus loads of music and listening to live bands.
