Elephants go on safari across Norwich

YMCAElephantAround 50 baby elephants, including one painted by YMCA Norfolk residents, have appeared in public places around Norwich, including several churches, in a mammoth exhibition until August 31.

Local artists, businesses and community groups are participating in Go Elephants!, what is believed to be the largest public art event Norwich has ever seen.

The life-size baby elephant sculptures, colourfully painted, decorated and adorned by artists, celebrities and community groups will be on display across Norwich for two months.

YMCAElephantMakingA group of artistic YMCA Norfolk residents have been working hard decorating one of the exhibits called The YMCA is not a White Elephant which is now on show on Queen’s Road at Norwich Bus Station, close to the site of the new YMCA currently being built there.

Ian, David, Adrian, Luke, Daniel and Kieron took part in a three-day project with local artist Mik Richardson, graphic artist, Ian Pickering, also a YMCA resident, as peer mentor and the NR5 project Youth Arts Manager, Elli Chapman.

The group, who have received arts awards for their work, visited the education centre at Norwich Castle Museum where they looked at artefacts from the Iron Age to the present day. The group focused on the All Saints Green area, where the first of two new YMCA accommodations is being built. Armed with photos and lots of ideas, the group returned to St Giles to set about planning their elephant’s design. The theme given was Archaeology, with a YMCA twist.
