Look out for the YMCA Elephant this summer

Go Elephants 4 - webA group of artistic YMCA Norfolk residents have recently been working hard decorating one of 50 fibreglass baby elephants. The finished elephant will be part of the Go-Elephants “One City…One Herd” exhibition taking place in Norwich from 23 June - 31 August 2008.

Ian; David; Adrian; Luke; Daniel and Kieron took part in the 3-day project with support from The NR5 project. Elli Chapman, Youth Arts Manager with
The NR5 Project invited YMCA residents to decorate an elephant with local artist Mik Richardson. They were also supported by graphic artist, Ian Pickering, also a YMCA resident, as peer mentor.

Day one involved a visit to the education centre at Norwich Castle Museum. Here the group looked at artefacts from the Iron Age to the present day. The group focused on the All Saints Green area, where the first of two new YMCA accommodations is being built. Armed with photos and lots of ideas, the group returned to St Giles to set about planning ‘their’ elephant’s design. The theme given was Archaeology, with a YMCA twist!

The YMCA elephant will go on display on 29th June at Norwich Bus Station. If you want to know what Go Elephants 1 - webthe finished elephant looks like, why not plan a visit to Norwich during July or August. I know you will be impressed. As John Drake said, having visited the elephant before he/she left St Giles, “I’ve seen the elephant and I’m very proud of it”.
